Hey there! If you're like me, you're trying to be a good leader while keeping God at the center of everything you do. Whether you're running a business, leading a team at work, or guiding your family, these lessons from the Bible can help. Let's break them down into simple, practical steps you can use right away.
Put Others First (Just Like Jesus Did)
"Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant" (Matthew 20:26)
Think about this: Jesus was the most powerful leader ever, but He washed His disciples' feet! That's like a CEO cleaning the break room. When you put others first:
Ask your team "How can I help?" instead of just giving orders
Notice when someone seems stressed and offer support
Share credit for wins with your whole team
Make time to listen to people's ideas, even when you're super busy
Here's a real example: Tom, a Christian business owner I know, starts each week by asking his managers what they need to succeed. His business is doing great because his team knows he cares about them as people, not just workers.
It's Okay to Say "I Don't Know"
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves" (Philippians 2:3)
Being a leader doesn't mean you have to know everything. In fact, God wants us to be humble. Try these simple steps:
When you make a mistake, just admit it
Ask for help when you need it
Thank people who point out problems you missed
Share stories about times you learned from mistakes
My friend Mike, who runs a construction company, tells his new hires about the time he messed up a big project. He says being honest about his mistakes helps his team trust him more.
Pray First, Act Second
"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault" (James 1:5)
Big decisions can be scary. But you don't have to figure everything out alone! Here's what works:
Start your day with a quick prayer before checking your phone
Keep a Bible verse on your desk as a reminder to seek God
Talk to other Christian leaders about tough choices
Include your family in big decisions
John, who owns a small retail store, has a special chair in his office he calls his "prayer spot." Before making any big choice, he spends five minutes there asking for God's guidance.
Do What's Right (Even When It's Hard)
"Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out" (Proverbs 10:9)
Sometimes doing the right thing costs money or makes life harder. But God promises to bless those who choose to be honest. Try this:
Tell the truth, even when a small lie would be easier
Keep your promises to your team and family
Turn down deals that might make money but don't feel right
Make time for your kids' events, even during busy seasons
Dave runs an auto repair shop. He could make more money by cutting corners, but he always does the full repair job right. His customers trust him and keep coming back.
Help Others Become Leaders Too
"And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others" (2 Timothy 2:2)
God wants us to help others grow. It's like planting seeds that will grow into strong trees. Here's how:
Take time to teach others what you know
Give people chances to lead small projects
Share how your faith helps you make decisions
Spend quality time teaching your kids about leadership
Robert, a manager at a tech company, meets with younger team members every Friday for lunch. He calls it his "Next Leaders Lunch." Many of those team members have gone on to become great leaders themselves.
Ready to Start!
Pick one thing from this list to try this week. Maybe start with a morning prayer, or schedule lunch with someone you can mentor. Small steps add up to big changes!
Remember, you're not alone in this journey. Jesus is the perfect example of a leader, and He promises to help us when we ask. Plus, there are lots of other Christian leaders out there facing the same challenges you are.
Want to do more? Find other Christian business owners or leaders in your area and meet up regularly. You can encourage each other and share what's working.
The best part? When you lead like Jesus, you become not just a better leader, but a better dad, husband, and follower of Christ. And that's what matters!
What's your next step going to be? Pick one thing from this post and try it tomorrow. You might be surprised at how God uses it to help you grow as a leader!
